During your apprenticeship, you will gain a wide range of invaluable work experience, gain a new qualifications and receive helpful guidance in college and in the work place. Apprentices tend to earn £100,000 more in a lifetime than other employees so it really is a great choice!

Apprenticeship Framework

An apprenticeship combines practical training in a job with study. It is essentially a set of work-related qualifications called a ‘framework’.

As an apprentice you will need to achieve a set of qualifications that together make up your apprenticeship framework. These will vary dependent on your occupation but will include:

  • A qualification that proves you have the skills and ability (competence) to do the job at the required level. This may be an NVQ.
  • A qualification that proves you have the required knowledge to underpin the work you are doing. (this may be combined with the competence qualification)
  • Functional Skills in English, Math’s and in some cases ICT, which will provide learners with skills and abilities they need to take an active and responsible role in their communities, everyday life, the workplace and educational settings. (If you have the required GCSEs you will be exempt from Functional Skills).
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) qualification confirms that you understand your rights and responsibilities in the workplace.
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) including: team work, creative thinking, independent enquiry, reflective learning, participating effectively and self-managing, are usually assessed as part of your wider studies.
