On this introductory course you will gain experience in using a range of basic listening and supportive skills, along with an outline understanding of three approaches to counselling. The course also looks at issues which relate to counselling and the use of supportive skills, for example:

  • Ethics, Equal Opportunity
  • Referral procedures
  • Registration and regulation
  • Accreditation and membership of a Professional Body
  • Supervision

The course will cover the following areas:

  •  Principles of person centred therapy.
  • Counselling skills
  • Principles of other therapeutic orientations (Psychodynamic and Behaviourist theories and models)
  • Personal Development and self-awareness
  • Legal and professional issues, including ethics
  • Contracting in counselling sessions
  • Skills development
The course is assessed through a final portfolio which is put together week-by-week.
There is no work experience placement included in the course.

On successful completion of the course and successful selection through an application and interview process, you can progress to the Level 3 Counselling Skills Certificate, a one year course building on the theory and skills covered at level 2.

  • Study a core qualification in a vocational discipline and continue to develop your English and Maths skills through functional skills, GCSE resits and the option of Level 3 qualifications

  • Take part in dedicated tutorial sessions to review your progress and development
