Light Vehicle Maintenance

This course is designed to give an insight into vehicle maintenance and offers progression routes onto the next level for suitable candidates.

The course is a mixture of practical and theory and you will build up a portfolio of evidence which will show your understanding of the units within this qualification.

  • Compression ignition power units
  • Spark ignition power units
  • Engine liquid cooling and engine lubrication systems
  • Spark ignition and compression ignition fuel systems
  • Vehicvle transmission systems
  • Battery and lighting systems
  • Steering and suspension
  • Vehicle braking systems
  • Vehicle inspection
  • Vehicle body repair
  • Vehicle refinishing
  • Customer care
  • Vehicle wheels and tyres
  • Vehicle exhaust systems
  • Vehicle ignition systems
  • Vehicle valeting
  • Motorcycle maintenance.

There are several methods of assessment including Practical assessments, tests and projects.

On completion of this course you can progress onto the full time level 2 course or an apprenticeship.

Level 1 – 3 x GCSES at grades E or level 2/3 (including English and Maths)

Study Programme


All students at Oldham College will participate in a personalised study programme that will maximise your potential and enable you to progress onto employment, apprenticeships or higher education.

This means you will:

  • Study a core qualification in a vocational discipline and continue to develop your English and Maths skills through functional skills, GCSE resits and the option of Level 3 qualifications

  • Take part in dedicated tutorial sessions to review your progress and development
