Design and Photography

This course establishes skills needed to begin a career in design or photography:

  • Develop a broad base of skills
  • Combine photography and graphic design
  • Explore various creative techniques
  • Explore mediums to communicate visually.

Ultimately you will get a taste of working in the design industry.

During the course you will complete units from the University of Arts London course developing visual language, research skills, drawing and materials and processes your ability to:

  • Communicate graphically and photographically
  • Focus on projecting artistic and commercial themes
  • Learn dynamic image making skills using macro photography
  • Explore studio photography using editing software from Adobe Creative
  • Create design for web sites and printed outcomes
  • Complete a final major project working independently.

We assess regularly with both informal/formal, formative and summative portfolio assessments. We provide students with tutor reviews which are usually three weeks prior to their final assessments.

We also embed self, peer and tutor assessment in almost every session, whether this is in verbal or written form. Learners have regular tutorials where their assessment grades are checked. Other areas of study such as English and Maths will involve examinations.

We aim to provide work experience through businesses in the region who welcome student collaborations, and placements.

19+ learners may have the opportunity to apply for UCO FdA’s in Graphic Design and Creative Media. 

Level 2 – 4 x GCSE grade D or level 3 (including English and Maths)

Explanation of entry requirements

All learners must have a D at GCSE maths and English as they will need to achieve a C before progressing onto Level 3.  If possible applicants should bring a portfolio/sketchbook of their art work to interview.

Study Programme

All students at Oldham College will participate in a personalised study programme that will maximise your potential and enable you to progress onto employment, apprenticeships or higher education.

This means you will:

  • Study a core qualification in a vocational discipline and continue to develop your English and Maths skills through functional skills, GCSE resits and the option of Level 3 qualifications
  • Participate in meaningful work experience
  • Enjoy a range of enrichment opportunities e.g. basketball, archery, skiing and sign language
  • Take part in dedicated tutorial sessions to review your progress and development
