Callum completed the Level 2 Horticulture apprenticeship with Oldham College and his employer First Choice Homes Oldham. Since completing the qualification, he has progressed into the role of their Apprentice Caretaker
Callum’s environmental and land-based background inspired him to start this apprenticeship – he had previously completed internships and traineeships at Oldham Council – as well as an interest in gardening developed by having his own allotment at Werneth Park.
“I have been at Oldham College since I left secondary school at 16,” says Callum, “where I have gained a range of qualifications and skills to help me later in life, and have been able to start my long-awaited journey into the Environmental industry.”
Day-to-day tasks on the apprenticeship include border and shrub maintenance, and general maintenance of grass and hedges. “The role varies throughout the year and requires you to change with the seasons – but I love working outdoors and in all weather conditions.”
As well as these tasks, Callum has completed modules including Plant Science and Nomenclature, Health and Safety, and Ornamental Turf. He has also developed the knowledge, skills and behaviours around Plant Machinery to work in this industry.
Callum was supported by a range of Oldham College staff and teams: “I have received support from my tutor/assessor Nick, the Additional Learning Support team, and received regular workplace mentoring by line managers and team leaders.”
The Level 2 apprenticeship has prepared Callum for his next steps. He is with the same employer, First Choice Homes Oldham, in the role as an apprentice Caretaker: “The Caretaking apprenticeship will make me more competent and multi-skilled within Horticulture.
“In the future, I hope to continue working within Caretaking or Horticulture and progress further – taking the leap towards becoming highly skilled in both areas of the Environmental industry.”
For those considering a Horticulture apprenticeship, Callum has the following advice:
“I think anyone who is considering starting the apprenticeship should, because it’s a fantastic way to gain invaluable knowledge and skills from highly skilled staff. You will flourish within your role!”
