Oldham College student completed a work experience placement like no other thanks to leading infrastructure group, Balfour Beatty.
Student Joseph Logan has just finished a work placement with the construction company. Joseph, studying Professional Construction L3 was placed with Balfour Beatty on their ‘Broadside’ project in New Cross area of Manchester.
Throughout his placement, Joe was given a real insight into the construction industry, which offered him an overview of how different roles and services work together on site. Joe was made to feel like one of the team and was assigned work related to the build and was tasked with creating a presentation at the end of the week.
The Broadside development consists of 274 private rental apartments made up of a mix of one, two and three bedrooms across two buildings positioned around a landscaped courtyard.
Stephen Semple, Area Director of Balfour Beatty’s North and Midlands East Delivery Unit, said: “With a significant skills shortage looming, it is imperative that we take significant steps to open up the industry and to encourage our future workforce to consider a career in construction.
“We are committed to encouraging and inspiring young people, helping those to develop new skills through work experience placements, apprenticeship and graduate opportunities.”
Balfour Beatty also registered Joe’s work placement with EDT (Engineering Development Trust) *Industry Cadets*. The hours and criteria for Joe’s placement allowed him to access a BRONZE accredited award which Joe was delighted to accept.
Joe said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my time working with Balfour Beatty. I had a jam-packed week experiencing the different team roles onsite, as well as understanding the detail of the construction. Following my placement, I would like to finish my course and will consider a role in construction management.”
