A SALON 7 Oldham apprentice successfully reached the regional finals of the Wella XPosure 2020 Student Hairdressing Competition – on top of finishing her studies and looking after her family.
XPosure is a national competition held annually by top haircare brand Wella with big prizes on offer – including a £1,000 hairdressing tool kit and one-on-one experience days with top stylists.
Amy chose to enter this year in the ‘Colour + Cut‘ category to show off her full range of skills, and she sailed through to the regional finals.
In this first round, she stripped her model’s hair and created a vibrant balayage using blues and purples: tones which compliment her model’s bright blue eyes. She then cut in layers to give the hair more volume (below, right).
THE REGIONAL finals were originally planned as a catwalk-style event at Bolton College in late-April where entrants would put together an outfit to suit their model’s hair, and be marked on how they styled the two together.
However, the event was cancelled after the Coronavirus lockdown and switched to a digital format.
Instead, Amy had to complete and submit tasks online, including a 500-word essay and completed head sheet diagrams.
And although she didn’t place when the winners were eventually announced yesterday (June 1), Amy can still be very proud of what she has achieved.
ENTERING a national competition sounds like a time-consuming task – but Amy has also done an incredible job of juggling XPosure with her other commitments.
Before lockdown, she was working 30 hours a week at Salon 7 Oldham.
She has also been submitting assignments and preparing for her end-point assessment (EPA) in July, where she will be observed for six hours.
Amy is also one of our entrants for this year’s WorldSkills competition.
