What's On

Arianna enrolled onto an apprenticeship after deciding to make a career change.

“I wanted to work in a field that offered constant progression. After discovering that my personal dentist was advertising a Dental Nursing apprentice vacancy, I decided to apply,” she says.

“I felt comfortable at Oldham College, having previously been a student on the Uniformed Public Services course.”

A typical day in Arianna’s apprenticeship includes making sure patients enter a clean and sterile environment, keeping the surgery stocked and providing assistance wherever necessary – such as helping in the decontamination rooms and supporting the reception desk. “I am developing a range of knowledge, skills and behaviours – and enjoy connecting the terminology I learn in College to the workplace.

“I can confidently set up for treatments, complete infection control and I understand the importance of the legislation that is in place.”

A highlight of Arianna’s experience is the support she has received, both from her employer and from College.

“The environment at Glodwick Dental Centre is so easy to work in – everyone is so uplifting and supportive.”

“From the very start I have also had amazing support from Oldham College. Tutors genuinely want you to do well, and the Safeguarding team is always there – even if you just need a chat.”

“There is a mutual respect between both staff and students, which I appreciate.”

After finishing the apprenticeship, Arianna hopes to complete further qualifications in radiography and oral health to broaden her dentistry opportunities.

“I am unsure where this journey will take me, but it is a goal of mine to have a job title I can say with pride, which is going well so far.”

Arianna would always recommend an apprenticeship. She says:

“You can be an apprentice at any age, and always have time to learn new skills. Apprenticeships give you the option to do something different when it’s suitable for you.”
