As part of Oldham College’s first-ever cohort of T Level learners, Joseph has worked towards his career ambition of becoming a civil engineer
Joseph initially started studying A Levels at a sixth form, before realising his strengths lay in more practical learning. He enrolled on the Construction Design, Surveying and Planning T Level in 2021 and hasn’t looked back.
“A key factor in finding a job is having work experience as well as good grades. Gaining experience with KIER Construction, a big company within this industry, as part of my course has been invaluable – more useful than spending all of my time in a classroom.”
Joseph went into his industry placement* as a trainee and shadowed the site manager to gain the relevant insight into his future career. He assisted with surveying, marking out, and was trained to deliver inductions to new starters.
“The T Level has helped towards achieving my ambition of becoming a civil engineer. I have secured a Telecommunications Engineering apprenticeship which starts after I have completed the T Level, and I would like to do a degree apprenticeship in the future to advance further.
“I chose Oldham College because it gave me the chance to try something new by doing a brand-new course. It is also convenient as I live nearby. It is great to have opportunities like this locally.”
Joseph’s advice for anyone considering doing a T Level is to “do it – I don’t see why you wouldn’t! It’s the future.”
