I was exploring routes available to me to progress my career, but didn’t have the skills to apply for roles in this industry. An apprenticeship fulfilled both aspects of developing core skills and gaining experience through working, making it a good option for me to progress into.
I chose Oldham College as they offered a good balance of working and studying, and supported me with this.
I have learned how to problem solve in both a virtual and physical environment more effectively.
Taking calls and ensuring all tickets I complete meet with the Service Level Agreement has helped me to develop quality assurance skills. I have also learned how to communicate better via telephone, and how to manage and deal with my workload.
I have learned a lot of theory and terminology, and how to be professional within a workplace.
Both Oldham College and my employer, Oldham Council, are pushing me to achieve my best, which I believe has translated into my work and coursework. They have both given me freedom in how to approach the apprenticeship, and ensure that I am fully supported in this.
I had previously kept my career goals wide open, but now after starting this apprenticeship I have realised that this is the line of work that suits me best and that I want to go into.
The apprenticeship has given me the knowledge to stay within the IT sector, but I could also apply myself to other similar roles in the future.
Make notes. Take pictures of boards, take screenshots of work you’ve completed or been shown, and write down important information – even if you feel you should know it easily, keeping everything documented will help in the long term. I do this with information I’ve just learnt and definitely want to remember in the future, or to share ideas with colleagues.
