UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music Performance and Production

This course will give you the opportunity to explore and extend your interests in music performance and/or production, through an immersive learning experience. You will watch demonstrations before working through current and relevant briefs to build your own portfolio of work.
In your music performance classes, you can work towards writing and recording your own music. This will give you a huge opportunity to develop your own style and sound as a musician, as developing yourself as an artist is paramount for you to become successful.
You will spend many hours rehearsing material, preparing and planning for shows and recording sessions, and showcasing your material to others to receive professional feedback on how to continue developing and growing as a musician and songwriter. You will research various fields within the music industry and do case studies on job roles to see which you might want to set your goals on once you finish your studies.
In your music technology classes, you will learn how to use all the most technical and riveting industry standard recording and live music equipment. You will have full access to our state of the art recording studios and production suites, along with the prospect to work directly with other music students or external musicians in these spaces.

You will gain lots of work experience - not just our own studios and putting on shows, but also within the community and wider industry. If you work hard and are passionate you will gain additional gigs, sessions to perform at and also paid work.
You will be taught by tutors who have a vast amount of experience and knowledge within the industry who continue to work in the industry to keep their skills and knowledge current and relevant.
In addition to this your music theory is crucial. We put on sessions to help develop your understanding of how music works and to become more confident speaking the language. To speak this language is to be a musician and will make you more employable, plus all universities want to see at least Grade 5 music theory - therefore it’s our job to impart this knowledge to you.
Work Experience
You will gain work experience from organising and putting on events at venues and working at open mic and jam nights. You will also set up equipment and perform at half-termly showcase sessions called ‘Milestone Sessions’. You will attend guest speaker talks from musicians and producers who will put on masterclasses and workshops to help you gain more experience and knowledge.
You will be assessed via a 'Final Major Project' which takes place at the end of the course. This project allows you to demonstrate the skills and knowledge that you have acquired through completion of your other units.
You will also be assessed through producing research work - as written essays, video recordings or presentations. Your performances will also be assessed - both your audio recordings and practical demonstrations.
We also assess your progress at live music venues, where you may be performing or setting up and running the live sound.
Levels 1 and 2 are geared towards you progressing to the higher Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music Performance and Production.
At Level 3 you will spend time focusing on progression straight into industry and also university options. Realistically these are the two outcomes, so which route you take depends on whether you want to continue developing your knowledge and experiences at degree level, or focus on your career.
We believe that education is essential to grow and develop as a technician, musician, artist, producer, and so on. All your tutors and technical support have degrees in their specific chosen fields but also have a vast amount of industry experience, and we are passionate about developing each and every one of our students to get you where you want to be.
