Two Esports learners were recently surprised by top Manchester City footballers, before going head-to-head in a racing game.

Oldham College learners Isaac and Rio travelled to City Studios to be interviewed by digital creator FG. The interview planned to promote the Esports courses Oldham College offers in partnership with City in the Community, the football club’s official charity.

However, once in the studio with FG they were surprised by Manchester City footballers Phil Foden, Josko Gvardiol, Rico Lewis, and James McAtee – and challenged to a ‘best of three’ game on Mario Kart.

Gvardiol and Lewis formed a team with Isaac, while Foden and McAtee joined Rio. The teams battled it out in a four-race relay and Rio’s team were the eventual winners!

This opportunity has allowed Isaac and Rio to build on the skills learned on their course, developing their confidence and driving their ambition.

As well as units on Games, Teams and Tournaments on the Level 2 course and Skills, Strategies and Analysis at Level 3, good communication and relationship building skills are essential for a career in Esports.

Rio said: “Meeting the players and doing media work was an amazing experience, which has proved to me that the Esports course can lead to fun and educational opportunities.”

Isaac agreed, saying: “This was a great experience – it has helped me with improving on my course and communicating with other people.”

The video produced of the experience has also amassed millions of views across the Manchester City social media channels.

Oliver Gilbert, 11+ Education Officer – Esports at City in the Community said:

“This collaboration between City in the Community, Oldham College and Manchester City Esports has been an incredible experience for everyone involved.

“Seeing Isaac and Rio featured across the club’s global platforms is a testament to their hard work and passion. The opportunity for them to spend time with Manchester City players, engage in meaningful conversations and gain insight into the world-class professionals has been truly inspiring.

“This partnership is a fantastic example of how education and sport can work together to create transformative experiences.”
