GMColleges Skills Competition Success

An audience watches a group of people standing in a line

Last week we hosted the GMColleges Digital Media and Computing competitions in our Digital & Creative Centre.

Learners from across the nine Greater Manchester colleges visited campus to put their skills to the test in 3D Games Art, Graphic Design, IT Support Technician, Media and Web Development challenges.

Competitions were themed around a campaign raising awareness of a homelessness charity, including planning and launching an event.

Richard Caulfield, Senior Policy Adviser for GM Colleges, launched the day with a talk drawing on his experiences as a volunteer for Mustard Tree, a Manchester-based homelessness charity.

Learners tackled challenging technical and creative briefs, working in teams and as individuals to create content for the launch of the charity event.

The Media competition involved creating short films, while Web Development learners created websites with fundraising calculators. In Games Art, learners created a fundraising mascot using 3D digital tools, and IT Support Technician students answered complex technical briefs from multi-national technology company CISCO. Graphic Design learners developed marketing materials for the campaign and generated merchandising ideas.

The competitions were judged by Richard and Tom Marshall, GMColleges Innovator in Residence for Digital & Creative.

The day concluded with a medal giving ceremony, and a visit from a local ice cream van.

Congratulations to all our winners from across Greater Manchester, including Oldham College T Level Infrastructure Technician learner Jake who took Gold in the Web Development competition!
