Oldham College proudly launched its brand-new on-site radio station, OC Radio, last week.
The official launch event last week saw our Principal, Simon Jordan, alongside VIP guests Clint Boon (Inspiral Carpets) and broadcasting legend Matty White, who cut the ribbon to officially open the station. Clint and Matty then recorded a podcast and radio show with our talented students, kicking off an exciting new chapter for the College.
While Oldham College’s media students have always created radio content as part of their course, the launch of OC Radio takes things to a whole new level. Over the past couple of years, with the support of our new Principal, a great deal of work has gone into the logistics, licensing, and programming.
Jay McCreary, Programme Tutor in Media Production, said:
“We had a fantastic launch morning, where we got Matty White and Clint Boon to officially launch the station, who then presented a half hour radio show.
The facilities we have had installed are fantastic, way beyond what I had originally imagined. When I was a student here in the 90s, it was my media tutor who helped me launch a radio career, resulting in several presenting roles across commercial radio and BBC, so I thought it would be great if I could give my students the same opportunity.
I can’t wait to get started on training students on how to become the next local radio stars!”
Clint Boon, from Inspiral Carpets said: “The quality of the equipment in the room is amazing, it’s just fantastic. I wish everyone the best of luck with it, it feels like the beginning of something amazing. [Students] follow your dreams and make the most of what you’ve got. Radio is a great thing – it’s an industry that does welcome people if you’re focused, driven and passionate about radio.”
Broadcasting legend Matty White said: “I want to say thank you to Oldham College! You’ve all got such an incredible opportunity here – I would love to have had this opportunity. I don’t think you can underestimate the power of radio and I’d say this to any students that are listening, make the most of what you have here, because once you leave college you might not get this opportunity again. This is where you can learn your craft and learn who you are as a broadcaster.”
With its state-of-the-art facilities and a team of dedicated professionals, OC Radio is set to become a vital hub for creativity, innovation, and local radio talent.
