Overview

Course: Dental Nursing Diploma Level 3

Start Dates:

You can enrol on this course at any time in the year.  Typically, it takes 18-24 months to achieve this diploma.

Delivery Method:

You will attend classes at college for 3 hours per week.  There will also be 1:1 learning and assessment in your workplace.  You will need to be working chairside with the dentist so that the mandatory observations of practice can take place.

Course Aims

This course is for adult learners who join or are who are working in the dental industry and want to upskill and gain a recognised level 3 qualification. This course will equip you with the current industry knowledge and you will develop the skills and behaviours required to work in line with professional and regulatory standards and enable registration as a Dental Nurse with the General Dental Council.  

What will I study?

This course provides you with the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to work in line with professional and regulatory standards to provide the required 'chair-side support' to complement the role of other dental professionals; including Dentists, Dental Therapists, Hygienists and Clinical Dental Technicians.

You will develop the technical knowledge and skills to be safe, skilled, flexible and effective in developing and delivering high quality care.  You will learn about the role and responsibilities of the registered dental nurse.

You will learn about professional practice, the General Dental Council’s Standards for the Dental Team, and working to meet legislation and regulatory standards.  You will learn about topics such as health and safety, anatomy and physiology, infection control, decontamination, instruments, consent, periodontal disease and treatment planning.  You will develop a range of skills such as charting teeth, making implants, supporting extractions, record keeping, dental procedures and providing oral health education for patients. 

How will I be assessed?

This course will be assessed through a range of methods such as observations, written questions, assignments and professional discussion.  It is internally assessed and external quality assured.  You will complete a portfolio of evidence over the duration of the programme.

Entry requirements

You must be employed in a Dental Nurse role and be working to support the dentist chairside.   In order for you to undertake this course your employer must agree to support you throughout this diploma and agree for the college team to complete your assessments in the workplace.
