Course: Pre Degree Foundation Art & Design Level 3

Start Dates: The course starts the week starting 1st September 2025 and finishes on the 3rd July 2026.

Delivery Method: This is a full time course. You will have 11 hours taught classes and will be expected to complete at least 5 self study hours. You will also take part in visits to Galleries, museums and University Open days.

Course Aims

This course will enable you to sample all of the core subjects in art and design so you can identify which part of the creative sector you would like to work in. This course will provide you with the opportunity to create an excellent body of work for your portfolio/university interview.  Throughout part 1 of the course you will experience four areas: 3D design, textiles, fine art and graphics design. Part 2 is where you will choose your specialist areas, these consists of two groupings: grouping 1 includes fine art, graphics, fashion, games design, illustration, film and video, animation and photography. Grouping two includes fashion design, costumes design, sculpture, architecture, interior design, textiles, 3D design, jewellery and product design. In part 3 of the course you are required to create your own project, which will run for approximately 12 weeks. This is the element of the course that makes up your final grade.

There are a confusing amount of creative courses out there at university level and it is important that you are able to make the right choice for you. This course helps you to identify your strengths and passions so our very experienced tutors can guide you towards the right creative degree course for you.  During your studies, you will carry out work in our specialist art and design studios, including the fashion and textiles studio, 3D studio, photography studio, graphic design suites, digital and games departments and fine art studios.  You will learn how to present your completed course work in appropriate formats and develop a digital and creative portfolio. You will be introduced to further degree, employment or apprenticeship opportunities.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is project/portfolio based but also requires students to demonstrate academic skills such as academic writing, Research skills and communication skills that include the ability in taking part in reflective critiques and group discussions.

Entry requirements

You should have GCSE English at grade C/4 and advanced study at level 3/A Level Creative qualification However, if you do not have these traditional level 3 Art and design qualifications but you do have a portfolio of art and design work, you can show this to our tutors at interview, along with examples of some written work. No. Students enrol on this course from a wide variety of backgrounds.
